Amazon.co.uk Review
If you are still struggling to get your newborn to sleep through the night, still getting up throughout the night to feed the little one, or perhaps you are feeling as if no end is in sight, you need to read Gina Ford's The Contented Little Baby Book. It may be the only thing you need to bring peace back into your frazzled existence with your tiny baby, or babies.

After all, this book promises to teach parents tried and tested methods to get their baby to sleep through the night by the time they are 10 weeks old.

For parents who are craving their first night of unbroken sleep, Ford's book may be the answer.

Ford's methods conjure up the image of a strict and loving old nanny from yesteryear. Her techniques go against the grain of many currently popular parenting philosophies. For example, Ford, an experienced maternity nurse, is against demand feeding, believes in the necessity of waking a sleeping baby in order to establish a daily routine. Her philosophy may not be the norm today, but Ford is confident of her methods based on years of experience handling hundreds of babies.

Providing an hour-by-hour, week-by-week guide on how to get a new baby into a routine, the book includes feeding and sleeping schedules based on a baby's age. The Contented Little Baby Book provides so much information that it may be necessary to keep this paperback book handy for reference should you employ Ford's techniques.

Experienced parents may not benefit from Ford's methods, but first-time parents may learn a lot from her ideas, and for the discerning reader of parenting books, this one is a must have. For the reader who would like to weigh other parenting methods before adopting Ford's techniques, the following books may be of interest: The Baby Book, by William Sears, M.D. and Martha Sears, R.N.; What to Expect in the first year, by Eisenberg, Murkoff and Hathaway; and Your Baby and Child, by Penelope Leach. --Abbe Jacobson

1 out of 5 stars "Contented"? Lazy, I say!   March 5, 2010
Victor Meldrew (UK)
I read this book with high expectations that this would be the first tentative step for my own newborn in stemming the moral tide from flowing out of this country.

After all, did you know that Chinese babies go to work in computer chip factories from the age of 9 months? Sucking spare lead solder from old circuit boards. Grafters they are... anyway I digress.

The book is fine and dandy but there is time allocated for sleep when the little blighter could be listening to Radio 4. Or even Radio 3 after 3 months. But Miss Ford (I assume she's not married?) doesn't make one mention, that I could find, of the ability of the brain to absorb subliminal messaging.

Sir Clive Sinclair never invented the C5 electric car by lying in a darkened room until an alarm clock woke him up. And now look at us! The only electric cars are in danger of running into the back of each other (thanks for the recall notice Toyota) and the polar bears are all wearing sunglasses and factor 50.

So get a grip Miss Ford... let's have a re-write and let's take it a bit more seriously this time. Just a hint... you don't have to be Austrian to use the cupboard under the stairs.

4 out of 5 stars Some guidance for unexperienced parents   February 25, 2010
E. Jackson (England)
After having my baby 8 weeks ago, and having absolutley NO experience of babies what-so-ever, I was desperate for some guidance, so I bought this book.
I do follow the routines, but only with a pinch of salt. If my baby is hungry an hour before Gina says so, I feed him!-why would you not? I am a strict and structured person and like routine but would anyone like me ignore their baby for the sake of a book?
For me, it was just a starting point to help me on my way. Some of the tips in the book are good, like to take out the dummy before he falls asleep so he doesn't get dependant on it- and my baby isn't dependant on it now.
Take bits of what you (and your baby) like, and disregard others. I don't understand anyone who slates this book!- it's just a book for goodness sake! You don't HAVE to do everything Gina Ford tells you to do and as for her not having any children of her own- is that not a good thing? At least she is detached from the difficult situation that you're in and guide you in the right direction. As a parent with your baby 24/7 (with little sleep to add probably) it is very easy to get disillusioned with everything.
This book does not cover every problem that might occur, but is a good book to have nearby to dip into.

Very helpful and informative and covers a whole range of issues. It is a little regimented but just follow the general ideas and you'll be fine

Tried to work with this book but it is too regimented, you are better off going with your instincts for a contented little baby and not trying to use this book.
I would not recommend it to anyone.

2 out of 5 stars Too regimented for my liking!   February 19, 2010

Having been given a recommendation from an acquaintance I decided to buy this book a few weeks after having my baby. Although some of the information in the book may prove to be useful, reading the regimented routines designed for mum and baby to follow filled me with absolute horror. I honestly cannot think of anything more dreadful than following this advice and can only believe that if people follow this book then they are destined to feel a failure if they stray from the routine, which can only cause more stress and anxiety in this already stressful and anxious time!

I have no doubt that some people are able to follow the routines in this book easily and find it works for them; if you also want to lead some semblance of a normal life then the windows of opportunity allowed within the daily timetable look very few and far between. Suffice to say that I have only taken on board the parts of the book which I think are useful (the weaning information and parts of the bedtime routine) but otherwise will not be following the suggested daily routine. My baby has been breastfed on demand since he was born and now at 9 weeks has set his own routine: last feed at 8pm and then goes to sleep, waking at 3.30am for night feeding, followed by roughly 3-3 and a half hour intervals between feeds until bedtime again. My gut feeling has been that following the baby's lead has been the right decision in my case, but of course different strategies work for different babies, and people.
