Product Description Provides practical advice to new parents that works from one of the UK's most respected and most talked about maternity nurses.
Amazon.co.uk Review If you are still struggling to get your newborn to sleep through the night, still getting up throughout the night to feed the little one, or perhaps you are feeling as if no end is in sight, you need to read Gina Ford's The Contented Little Baby Book. It may be the only thing you need to bring peace back into your frazzled existence with your tiny baby, or babies. After all, this book promises to teach parents tried and tested methods to get their baby to sleep through the night by the time they are 10 weeks old. For parents who are craving their first night of unbroken sleep, Ford's book may be the answer. Ford's methods conjure up the image of a strict and loving old nanny from yesteryear. Her techniques go against the grain of many currently popular parenting philosophies. For example, Ford, an experienced maternity nurse, is against demand feeding, believes in the necessity of waking a sleeping baby in order to establish a daily routine. Her philosophy may not be the norm today, but Ford is confident of her methods based on years of experience handling hundreds of babies. Providing an hour-by-hour, week-by-week guide on how to get a new baby into a routine, the book includes feeding and sleeping schedules based on a baby's age. The Contented Little Baby Book provides so much information that it may be necessary to keep this paperback book handy for reference should you employ Ford's techniques. Experienced parents may not benefit from Ford's methods, but first-time parents may learn a lot from her ideas, and for the discerning reader of parenting books, this one is a must have. For the reader who would like to weigh other parenting methods before adopting Ford's techniques, the following books may be of interest: The Baby Book, by William Sears, M.D. and Martha Sears, R.N.; What to Expect in the first year, by Eisenberg, Murkoff and Hathaway; and Your Baby and Child, by Penelope Leach. --Abbe Jacobson

A useful guide. July 22, 2010 HebsyJane 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a first time new mum I purchased this book when my daughter was approximately 5 weeks old. I found it a really useful insight into the life of a newborn and their requirements (things that I thought I knew about!!). In my opinion the book is more geared towards breast feeding mothers but don't let that stop you from buying it as bottlefeeding is mentioned and the routines are applicable to both. The routines do appear quite regimented but if you like to be organised then they do provide structure. I used the routines as a guide rather than following them exactly. Some of the practices do go against my instincts like waking a sleeping baby but Gina does rationalise her reasons for this which make sense. A useful read and valuable guide for first time mums.
Didn't like it, but... July 20, 2010 Georgia P. (Greece) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered this book after I read a stellar review at a Greek web site. I was therefore quite disappointed when I got to read it, for the following reasons:
1. If you follow the routines, it will make you the slave of your baby. The book gives you instructions about what to do almost every minute of the day - when to wake up baby, how long to feed him/her, when to wash your feeding equipment, when to express milk (which the author considers a "must"), etc.
2. The book recommends that baby's room be completely dark when baby sleeps, even during the day. My opinion is that, on the contrary, baby should learn to sleep in all kinds of environments, including when there is some light is the room, and noise. You will not always be able to offer optimal sleeping conditions.
My baby is now four months old and exclusively breastfed. She eats every four hours (8am, 12am, 4pm, 8pm. 00am-she is so cute eating while asleep!), which gives me free time to do other things in between, and has slept through the night since she was a little less than three months old. Some days she may sleep more than the recommended 3 hours during the day, some others less.
I give two stars to this book because it has offered some advice that I appreciated, though unrelated to the routines: starting early, teach baby how to fall asleep alone, in his or her cot; do not establish eye contact with baby during night feeds and changes, in order not to stimulate interaction.
So, finally, yes, in my opinion you will need to establish SOME routine. Do not feed on demand, as this will really make mother's every moment unpredictable. But this book's recommendations are too taxing for the mother.
Judge for yourself and give this book a try..... July 19, 2010 kabe 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Many people warned me off Gina Ford and her routine based methodology - saying she didn't have children of her own - what could she possibly know?
But to be honest, when my husband and I were driving around with our 5 week old daughter at 1:00a.m for the third week in a row, I just looked at him and said "there has to be another way"... So I stayed up until 3:30a.m to read the first routines in the book in sheer desperation to find ANYTHING that would help our daughter sleep better and you know what - TWO days later she was sleeping from 7:00pm to 7:00a.m (with a dream feed at 10:00pm)
Yes, I have found the routines constraining - trying to always have her midday sleep in her cot, but you know what - it beats being awake all night ANY day! ;-)
You have to use your common sense though! Yes your baby might not want to sleep sometimes when she is "supposed" to be asleep - but just keep going and don't get too stressed if they don't fit in exactly to the times suggested straight away - persist, and they WILL get it!
Just make your own mind up rather than be warned off - I have realised that every baby is different - so you are at the end of your sanity - just try it - it could work for you and your baby.
good luck!
xx
Contented little robot July 16, 2010 icklebuh 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Really in 2010 people are raising children like this!? This book is the bootcamp for babies book. Teach your child how to comply and fit in to your life like a good little robot. Very sad. Don't recommend to anyone but that is just my opinion for some maybe this book works.
If you want to stablish your baby in a routine this is the book July 11, 2010 New Parent (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you want to follow a routine with your baby this is the book. I used it and I loved it. My baby naturally was trying to create a pattern of sleeping and feeding and then when she was 8 weeks I came accross this book. It helped me to understand her needs and I can see it in her eyes that she's so happy.
Just read the whole book before starting any routine and please don't go crazy and try to do everything by the book. Respect your baby and use this as a guide line.
If you are against having a baby on a routine simply don't buy this book. No need to spend your money and time just so you can trash something that is so helpful to so many people in the world. Mothers need to learn to respect each other and their choices.
