5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and gripping   September 2, 2010
Dazra
This book was recommended to me having bought ChiRunning by Danny Dreyer. I'd also read an article in Men's Health about Barefoot Running.

I started reading Born to Run expecting a lot of information about running, but I found myself engrossed by a story about inspiring people and eye-opening running philosophies. After finishing the last chapter, I couldn't wait to get outside for a run.

If you run for exercise, read this book and learn to run for fun. People might give you strange looks for running down the street smiling, but it feels great.

5 out of 5 stars Life changing?   August 29, 2010

An essential read for those who run and those who don't run.

A toe opener for those who wear trainers and those who throw away trainers because conventional wisdom tells you they wear out after x miles.

3 out of 5 stars Very Interesting but not a runners bible   August 25, 2010

I have read 70% of the book and will finish it as it is very interesting, especially if you are a runner. I may have purchased the book in a hurry (I buy so many off here)thinking that it was more a runners bible than a record of ultra running achievements.

There are some extremely interesting facts and quotes about running barefoot which was worth buying the book for alone.

The facts are all there but I don't think the author lays them out very well. He assumes the reader is knowledgeable of Spanish as there are many short quotes not translated. I never saw the need for him to quote directly, the translation would have been much better.

The book tends not to flow in places with characters changing names and so long as you accept that some chapters can possibly have little bearing on the whole book, you will be fine.

It takes about 5-8 chapters to get going, there is a lot of mundane stuff at the beginning that does not need to be there.

A good book with a story that is also loaded with facts and takes a fresh look at running

5 out of 5 stars Keep on running   August 22, 2010
nigeyb (Hove, England)
Christopher McDougall's compelling book embraces running tribes, ultra-marathon runners, the science of running, running shoe manufacturers, human evolution, transcendence, the joy of being alive, and more. As someone contemplating their first marathon at age 48, I am thoroughly inspired. Like all great genre books, whilst ostensibly only about one subject - running in this case - it manages to say something profound about the human condition. I heartily recommend it.
